Best Screwup & Recovery award of 2009
*nix category (incl. osx)
Nominees:
- Ravn: For pushing a remote update to a live in-car diagnostics system that breaks the live update function.
To avoid recalling all cars to do a software card swap the program was studied, and a backdoor was found. By asking the car to send "live logs" (something it does by http post over edge) it was possible to get it's ip in the access.log and send a working remote update script thru scp. However this only works if the car is driving. So a script was made that automates this task. Note: Ravn was nominated in 2008 for almost the same case, but needed help from Zhiva to recover, so he did not qualify.
